Once upon a time there was a goblin who created a very unusual mirror. Anyone who looked in the mirror would see only ugliness and cruelty. As the goblin and her minions argued and fought, the Snow Queen comes by to stop them. During the scuffle, the mirror is shattered and the shards of glass were picked up by the Snow Queen's cold wind scattering them across the land. Wherever shards of the enchanted glass landed, seeds of ugliness were sown, warm hearts were frozen, and friendships were torn in two.
Now it happened that a young girl named Gerda and her best friend Kai were frolicking in her grandmother's beautiful rose garden when a gust of cold wind blew a sliver of the goblin's mirror right into Kai's eye! Kai, no longer wanting to play with his friend, tore apart a rose bush and pushed Gerda aside to see a shimmering vision that had just appeared. It was the Snow Queen, who invited a dazzled Kai to her home, the Ice Palace. Kai dashed off with her, forgetting about Gerda completely.
Gerda was worried about Kai, wondering where he disappeared to, and she became determined to find him and bring him home. She traveled to the home of the Summer Lady, a warm beautiful place full of flowers, birds and a most playful cat. Gerda played happily until she saw a large red rose in the Summer Lady's hat that reminded her of her grandmother's garden and her best friend Kai.
Gerda returned to her journey of finding Kai and found herself in a forest where even the trees seemed to be watching her. A band of robbers saw the locket Gerda was wearing and decided to add it to their collection of loot. When Gerda explained what she was doing, they decided to help her instead. They took her shawl in exchange for a sleigh and two reindeer and sent her on her way.
At the Ice Palace, the Snow Queen had grown fond of Kai. While the shard of goblin's mirror was in his eye, Kai's heart was all but frozen, but he knew that he missed someone dearly. The Snow Queen grew frustrated that Kai seemed so distant and offered to set him free if he could solve a puzzle. He was to spell the word L-O-V-E out of blocks of ice. This proved to be a challenge since Kai could only see ugliness. His inability to solve the puzzle caused him to nearly freeze in place.
After struggling through a storm of Snowflakes sent by the Snow Queen, Gerda finally reaches the Ice Palace. When she found Kai, he did not respond to her. She leaned over him and began to cry. Magically, her tears washed the piece of mirror from his eyes and his heart began to thaw. Kai could now see the beauty and kindness all around him and he was able to solve the Snow Queen's puzzle. The Snow Queen kept her promise, allowing Kai to leave with his best friend. Gerda and Kai returned home where Gerda's grandmother was overjoyed to see them once again, happily playing in the rose garden.
