History

  

San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet, founded as San Antonio Dance Theater in 1983 and under the direction of Susan Beil Connally since 1987, was created to provide training and performance opportunities for local dancers and choreographers in classical and contemporary dance.


Fall ballets presented since 1989 include:

* Hansel and Gretel and The Snow Queen choreographed by Artistic Director Susan Beil Connally and The Magic Toyshop (La Boutique Fantasque) choreographed by Susan Beil Connally and Eugene Slavin (Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo)

* Cinderella and Coppelia choreographed by former Houston Ballet principal dancer, Phillip Broomhead

* Beauty and the Beast by Alun Jones (Louisville Ballet) – the first in San Antonio to present a ballet with “virtual scenery”

* Snow White choreographed by Pennsylvania Ballet ballet mistress, Samantha Dunster, with original music by Kermit Poling; the 2014 production presented with the Mid-Texas Symphony and the 2015 production presented with musicians from the San Antonio Symphony

* Guest artists in lead roles: Molly Smolen and Tiit Helimets (San Francisco Ballet); Lauren Anderson, Phillip Broomhead, Dominic Walsh, Dorio Perez, Ian Casady and Melody Herrera (Houston Ballet); 

* 30 years of admission-free performances for Title 1 elementary, middle and high schools


Spring mixed repertory concerts, Dance Kaleidoscope established in 1989 and community concerts prior, have included:

* One Act ballet such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Alun Jones of Louisville Ballet, excerpts from Sleeping Beauty staged by Karin Heiden, The Firebird by George Skibine and staged by Thom Clower, Gaiete Parisienne by Susan Trevino, L’Histoire du Soldat and The Fairy Tale Garden by Susan Beil Connally

* Contemporary works created by such dance masters as Fernando Bujones (American Ballet Theatre), Dominic Walsh (Houston Ballet), Harrison McEldowney (River North Dance Chicago), and Ruka White (Limon Dance Company)

* Concert-length works by local professional and company member choreographers (students)

* Performers and companies presented as guest artists – Dominic Walsh Dance Theatre; Anna Liceica (American Ballet Theatre); Kristopher Wojtera/Erica De La O (Louisville Ballet); Alys Shee and Aaron Smyth (International Ballet Competition Finalists); Brooklyn Mack, Yukihiro Tamura and Tamako Miyazaki (Washington Ballet), Eric Luna and Georgia Ambarian (So You Think You Can Dance) and Jacob Bush (SA Met Ballet alum) and Rachel van Buskirk – both from Atlanta Ballet

* This performance was an official Fiesta Event from 1999 to 2014


SA Met Ballet has presented Summer Dance intensive workshops since 1987: 

* Ballet master faculty has included Piotr Nardelli (Bejart Ballet), Li Chou Cheng (Texas Christian University), Eddy Tovar (Orlando Ballet), Alfonso Figueroa (Boston Ballet), Irina Vakhromeeva (Moscow Ballet), Amy Aldridge (Pennsylvania Ballet) and Lauren Anderson (Houston Ballet)

* Jazz master faculty has included John Medeiros (Alvin Ailey), Harrison McEldowney (River North Dance Chicago), and Diane West (Texas Christian University)

* Contemporary and Modern master faculty have included Kurt Douglas (Limon Dance Company), Patrick Coker (Jessica Lang Dance), Lyn Wiltshire (Alvin Ailey), Nikki Sell (Prometheus Dance), Darrell Cleveland (Dallas Black Dance Theatre), and Jamy Meek (Netherlands Dance Theatre), Heather Lipson Bell (LA Opera, Helios)

* Ancillary classes have been presented in Progressing Ballet Technique, Nutrition, Stage hair and makeup, ballet terminology, sewing and crafts

* Demonstration performances have been presented, free to the public, in-studio and at the Carver Community Cultural Center Jo Long Theatre

  

Collaborations have included: 

* Youth Orchestras of San Antonio: Tricentennial Festival of Music and Dance; An Evening of Traditional Music and Dance

* San Antonio Symphony Concert for Kids: Bob McGrath of Sesame Street, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and Peter and the Wolf

* The Royal Ballet’s The Sleeping Beauty, presented by ARTS San Antonio

* Nine years of The Nutcracker collaboration with ARTS San Antonio

* Eight years of collaborations of The Nutcracker with Ballet West presented by the San Antonio Performing Arts Association

* Performances in special events to benefit The San Antonio Main Library (Angelina Ballerina), The San Antonio Zoo, KLRN TV

* The Order of the Alamo Coronation

* San Antonio Lyric Opera – Don Giovanni and The Merry Widow

* San Antonio Folklife Festival and Asian Festival


SA Met Ballet, a member of Regional Dance America since 1988, an adjudicated national association of dance companies, has:

* Attended 24 regional festivals, four national festivals (Houston, Pittsburgh, Montreal and Phoenix) and hosted two regional festivals bringing over 1400 dancers, directors, chaperones and master teachers to San Antonio for three days of dance classes and three nights of adjudicated performances by member companies

* Had 5 Emerging Choreographer pieces and 29 mainstage works chosen for performances

* Been awarded the Stream Award for Artistic Excellence in 2000 and our performance of Dominic Walsh’s Sucumbir earned him the RDA National Choreography Recognition Award in 2006

* Collaborated with Regional Dance America/SW companies for the USA International Ballet Competition RDA performances in Jackson, MS with choreography by Paul Mejia, John Magnus, and Jimmy Gamonet

* College Dance and Theatre Department Programs: The Boston Conservatory, Southern Methodist University, UC Irvine, California Institute of the Arts, University of Oklahoma, Texas Christian University, Cornish College for the Arts, Oklahoma City University, University of Virginia, Point Park University, Northwestern, Belhaven University, and Indiana University

* Professional Companies: Atlanta Ballet, Augsberg Ballet (Germany), Ballet Met (Ohio)
